All 9 essential amino acids - the new Bulletproof EAAs
The human body needs 20 different amino acids to synthesize proteins, which are necessary for building muscle mass and other tissues. However, we can produce 11 of these 20 ourselves from other amino acids if necessary. However, our body cannot synthesize nine amino acids itself, which is why they are considered essential amino acids, or EAAs for short.
Proteins are known to play a key role in building and maintaining muscle mass. However, proteins are also involved in other functions in our body. For example, enzymes and some hormones are made up of protein structures. They are found in the immune system and all tissues of our body and, as a component of the blood, are involved in nutrient transport.
Most of us probably cover the majority of our daily protein needs through a protein-rich diet, which includes protein powders such as Battle Whey or Battle Vegan. Dietary proteins generally provide all 20 proteinogenic amino acids and are therefore ideal for providing the majority of amino acids.
It's no secret that intense strength training promotes muscle growth. The training stimulus causes an increase in muscle protein synthesis, in which amino acids are assembled into new proteins. At the same time, however, training also initially causes increased muscle protein breakdown. To ultimately build muscle mass, the rate of muscle protein synthesis must exceed the rate of muscle protein breakdown.
Studies suggest that consuming a rapidly digestible protein source, such as whey protein, after exercise optimizes post-workout anabolic processes by increasing muscle protein synthesis. Further studies have also observed that only the nine EAAs, but not the remaining 11 proteinogenic amino acids, are able to stimulate muscle protein synthesis.
For this reason, and due to the fact that we can produce all other relevant amino acids from the nine EAAs if needed, bodybuilders have been using EAAs during training for several years to shift the increased protein turnover during intense workouts to their advantage. Additionally, unlike complete proteins, EAAs do not require digestion but can be absorbed directly from the intestine into the blood. One study, for example, observed that amino acid levels peak after just 20 minutes of ingesting free EAAs.
The Bulletproof EAAs were therefore developed with the intention of supplying the muscles with amino acids during hard and intensive training.
All 9 essential amino acids instead of just 8
Most EAA products on the market contain 8 essential amino acids. The reason for this is that even in biology class today, we still learn that 8 amino acids are essential for the body, not 9. However, the ninth essential amino acid, histidine, is missing from most products.
This fact dates back to an error made by the then American Research Council in 1968. In a paper on the recommended daily amounts of nutrients, they forgot to classify histidine as essential, although earlier data had already concluded that histidine was one of them.
Due to confusion among experts, several further studies were conducted, concluding that histidine is clearly essential. However, this has done little to change many people's false assumption that there are eight EAAs. Bulletproof EAAs also didn't contain histidine for a long time. But that's now over. Our product now contains a guaranteed complete amino acid profile, which has been confirmed by external laboratory analyses.
Electrolytes for better hydration
Not only nutrients are crucial during exercise, but also fluid intake. On the one hand, we sweat during physical activity, and on the other hand, strength training causes an acute increase in fluid retention in the muscles. This is the ever-popular "pump effect." A solution of electrolytes and carbohydrates can increase fluid absorption during exercise.
For this reason, we decided to supplement the Bulletproof EAAs with electrolytes. Additional carbohydrates can then be added, for example, in the form of cluster dextrin.
How should Bulletproof EAAs be taken?
Studies have observed that consuming 9 to 15 grams of EAAs around training leads to a higher net nitrogen balance. One serving of Bulletproof EAAs (18 g) provides 10 g of pure EAAs. Depending on body weight and training duration, the dosage should therefore be between 1 and 1.5 servings (18-27 g) during training.
Alternatively, you can supplement meals with lower protein content or poor protein quality with Bulletproof EAAs. Depending on your needs, the amount should be between 1 and 2 servings (18-36 g). Bulletproof EAAs come from plant sources and are therefore suitable as a supplement to a vegan diet.
